Child custody during the summer months: Keep these things in mind

On Behalf of | Jun 7, 2018 | Uncategorized |

It goes without saying that your child is looking forward to summer vacation. While you may have to work all summer long, it doesn’t mean you can overlook the many wants and needs of your child over the next few months.

Child custody disputes have a way of moving to the forefront during the summer months. The way you deal with these will have a lot to say about the way things play out during this time of the year.

In addition to reviewing your child custody agreement, here are a few other things you should do:

  • Schedule any vacations as far in advance as possible. Once you do this, share the schedule with the other parent to ensure that you are both on the same page. Also, don’t make any changes to your vacation schedule after it’s set in stone.
  • Keep an open line of communication. From vacations to summer activities, there’s a lot to think about during this time of the year. You need to keep an open line of communication with the other parent. From text messaging to email to phone calls, you have options.
  • Always do what’s in the best interest of your child. Your child wants to have a good time during the summer months. He or she doesn’t want to get bogged down by child custody disputes. Keep this in mind as you communicate with the other parent and make decisions.
  • Don’t get upset if your child misses the other parent. This is bound to happen at some point, and you shouldn’t see it as a bad thing. It’s nice to know that your child loves both parents equally.
  • Stay current with your child support payments. If you owe child support, continue to make payments as expected throughout the summer months (even if other expenses come to light).

Summer vacation is a big deal for your child, so make sure you have everything in order regarding custody and related matters.

If you have any questions or concerns, you can always review your parenting and custody agreement for more information on what you should and shouldn’t be doing.
